Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): Advanced Fetal Medicine for Early Genetic Insights

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a critical diagnostic procedure in fetal medicine, used to detect genetic and chromosomal abnormalities early in pregnancy. Conducted between the 10th and 13th weeks of gestation, CVS involves collecting a small sample of cells from the placenta, known as chorionic villi, to test for conditions such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and other genetic disorders. At Parvathi Hospital in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, we offer CVS as part of our specialized fetal medicine services, aiming to provide expectant parents with early, accurate, and reliable insights into their baby’s health.

Our approach to Chorionic Villus Sampling at Parvathi Hospital combines cutting-edge technology with compassionate care. Our team of expert fetal medicine specialists and genetic counselors ensures a thorough and supportive process, from initial counseling to post-test follow-up. We are dedicated to helping families make informed decisions with confidence, supported by our advanced diagnostic capabilities and personalized care plans.

Procedure Overview:

Pre-Test Counseling and Preparation

Before the CVS procedure, our genetic counselors provide comprehensive counseling to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and limitations of the test. This step ensures that parents fully understand the implications and make an informed decision about proceeding with CVS.

Precision and Safety in Procedure

CVS is performed with the utmost precision using ultrasound guidance to accurately collect placental tissue. Our experienced fetal medicine team offers two approaches: transcervical (through the cervix) or transabdominal (through the abdomen), depending on the placenta’s position and the patient’s medical needs. This meticulous approach minimizes risks and maximizes diagnostic accuracy.

Comprehensive Genetic Testing

The collected sample is analyzed in our state-of-the-art laboratory for a wide range of genetic and chromosomal abnormalities. Our skilled genetic counselors interpret the results and discuss them with patients, offering guidance on any necessary follow-up or further steps.

Supportive Post-Test Care

After the CVS procedure, we provide detailed post-test care, including regular follow-up appointments to monitor the mother’s health and address any concerns. Our team is committed to offering emotional support and practical advice to help families navigate the results and plan the next steps in their pregnancy journey.

FAQ's

CVS cannot detect all genetic conditions, and it does not provide information about neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Additional tests may be recommended depending on your individual situation.

Following the procedure, you will be monitored for any complications. It typically takes 1-2 weeks to receive the test results. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and explain their implications for your pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) offers a wealth of information on CVS. You can also discuss any questions or concerns you have with your doctor.
