Ovarian Cysts: Understanding Cysts During Pregnancy

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on one or both ovaries. While common in general, they can sometimes occur during pregnancy. Most ovarian cysts are benign (noncancerous) and typically don’t cause any problems or complications. However, some may require monitoring or even treatment.

Types of Ovarian Cysts in Pregnancy

There are various types of ovarian cysts, and some are more likely to occur during pregnancy than others:

Corpus luteum cyst

This is a common, functional cyst that forms after ovulation and usually resolves on its own within the first trimester.

Dermoid cysts

These contain hair, skin, or other tissues and are usually harmless but may require monitoring.

Cystadenomas

These are benign but can grow large and may need to be removed during pregnancy.

Signs and Symptoms

Ovarian cysts during pregnancy often don’t cause any symptoms. However, if a cyst ruptures or bleeds, you might experience:

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you experience any symptoms suggestive of an ovarian cyst, your doctor will perform a pelvic exam and may order an ultrasound to confirm the presence and type of cyst. Treatment depends on the size, type, and symptoms caused by the cyst.

FAQ's

Most ovarian cysts don't affect pregnancy. However, large cysts can cause discomfort or block the fallopian tubes, potentially impacting fertility.

Surgery is usually only necessary if the cyst ruptures, bleeds heavily, or is suspected to be cancerous. In most cases, doctors prefer to monitor the cyst throughout the pregnancy.

Many ovarian cysts disappear on their own after pregnancy. If a cyst persists, your doctor can discuss treatment options after delivery.
